Favorite Songs of 2005

Keeping with the theme of year end lists, here are my top tracks of the year. I originally was just going to stick with five, but the Gonzalez cover of The Knife's Heartbeats wouldn't quit. So, I've added a different category just for the Hispanic Swede (cause, come on, he is a different category) - best cover. You can call it a bonus.

When putting these tracks together, I came across Sean at Said the Gramophone's My 22 Favourite Songs of 2005 post. I was dumbfounded when I noticed the overlap between our lists. Not like it matters, but I'd like to note that I came up with these as independently as one can in this day and age.

My top 5(+1) songs of 2005:
1) Okkervil River - For Real.mp3
2) Clap Your Hands & Say Yeah - The Skin of My Country Yellow Teeth.mp3
3) Broken Social Scene - Ibi Dreams of Pavement.mp3
4) Imogen Heap - Hide & Seek.mp3
5) Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone.mp3

Cover of 2005 - José González - Heartbeats.mp3 (The Knife)

While I certainly have no problem with Kelly Clarkson (has "anonymous" even listened to that song?) I have a little trouble with Mr. Gonzalez making the list 2 years after releasing the song into the wild. That said, it's so good that it should take an honorary position on year-end lists until something better comes along to usurp it.

Anonymous says...Have I heard that song? You think I live in antartica? That song was on constant rotation for the last year!

Let me sing you a melody in my high pitched crackly voice...

    But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so movin' on, yeah yeah
Thanks to you, now I get what I want
    Since you been gone!!!

Look to each his own. Just seems like a funny departure from the 4 previous songs listed. Also it was released on Nov. 24th 2004 so is it even eligble for 2005?

Bah we all have guilty pleasures...mine for example is Lionel Richie. I do love me some Phil Collins now and then as well.

Sure that Clarkson song is different, but it's been stuck in my head and it (strangely, perhaps?) makes me happy. That's all it takes to qualify.

I guess it's not technically a 2005 song - and neither is the Gonzalez cover. Oh well. I'm not that technical.

Speaking of Lionel, I was happy to see that Stereogum reposted their storyboard for "Hello." That video is amazing.

Hey, personally, I'm loving your selection. Thanks for sharing! I'm even (especially?) loving the Kelly Clarkson tune. Who knew??? Where the hell have I been???
